Psoriatic arthritis review

Psoriatic arthritis is most commonly a seronegative oligoarthritis found in patients with psoriasis, with less common but characteristic differentiating features of distal joint involvement and arthritis mutilans. The arthritis frequently involve the knees, ankles, and joints in the feet. Usually, only a few joints are inflamed at a time. In patients with psoriatic arthritis who have arthritis of the spine, a gene marker named HLA-B27 is found in about 50% of cases. More women than men have this kind of psoriatic arthritis, which tends to be associated with more severe forms of psoriasis. For example, the decline in the number of immune cells called helper T cells in people with AIDS may play a role in the development and progression of psoriasis in these patients.
