Playing Squash

Squash tennis was invented, more or less accidentally, in 1883 at St. Paul’s School, in New Hampshire. The game was formerly called squash rackets, a reference to the “squash-able” soft ball used in the game. Squash developed from at least five other sports involving rackets, gloves, and balls having roots in the early 12th century in France. US Squash, the sport’s governing body in this country, has tracked a 20 percent spike in membership among players under 18 over the last two years. The parents are pushing their kids more because of academic ambitions, because squash is almost like a more upscale product. College is not the only reason the game is enjoying a youth boom. Several private clubs have opened their courts to teams of young people.
