Discoid lupus symptoms

Discoid lesions develop with red inflamed areas that may become thick, scaly and crusty and may cause scarring. Up to 10% of persons with discoid lupus eventually develop the systemic form of lupus (SLE).
Scalp involvement (including itchiness, redness and peeling) may be very prominent and patches of baldness may occur.
The rash is typically painless and does not typically itch. The rash may last for anywhere from days to years and may reoccur. Rash on the scalp may cause hair loss that is usually permanent. Lupus Panniculitis is common.
You should protect yourself from strong sunlight. The regular use of a good sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) should be part of your daily routine. Clothing can also be a very effective sun block, particularly for your shoulders and arms.
